Megan Rapinoe is no stranger to controversy.

The US Women’s National Team star has faced backlash for her comments about former president Donald Trump, trans rights, racial inequality in America, the national anthem and many more.

But Rapinoe‘s latest comments may have just create her biggest blowback yet.

The 38-year-old played in her final professional game on Saturday. Her OL Reign squad fell to Gotham FC, 2-1, in the championship game of the NWSL playoffs.

But Rapinoe played just three minutes in the contest before she was subbed off following a presumed torn achilles.

Following the game, Rapinoe spoke about the injury.

“This is a long one,” she said. “Although, I’m gonna get the Aaron Rodgers treatment, whatever that is. So I’m gonna be calling him or whoever did his surgery. Because we need to speed this up.”

It’s the next part of her comments, however, that has drawn ire.

“I thought about it a little bit…I’m not a religious person or anything. And if there was a god, y’know, this is proof that there isn’t. This is f—– up.”

All the while teammate Rose Lavelle is trying to maintain a straight face know that Rapinoe just opened a Pandora’s box of anger.

Sure enough, it took less than 24 hours for the comments to blow up on Twitter.

“’If God existed, nothing bad would ever happen to me’” is her stated thinking here, and man that is a level of narcissism you rarely see,” @JonPgh tweeted.

I, personally, believe this is a signal that God exists and is working harder than ever,” wrote @AverageChiesa.

“An atheist’s career ended in humiliation. Seems to me to be proof that God has a wicked sense of humor,” said @JenWEsq.

Sounds pretty spiteful. But hey, what do we know?

One thing is certain, Rapinoe has played her last game. But we doubt this is the last we hear about her.
