The New York Mets finally broke out of their weeks-long losing streak on Thursday night, as they beat the Atlanta Braves by a score of 4-0 to tally their first back-to-back wins in over two weeks. The win also put them back in first place in the NL East.

While it cannot be proven, perhaps the New York Mets have decided to use their Bronx-based giraffe mascot from their mascot races as a sacrificial lamb, as their abuse of the famously long-necked mammal ultimately resulted in a win over the Braves.

Having the Bronx Giraffe lose the mascot race is nothing new — it’s winless so far this season. The Queens Subway is in the lead with 14, followed by the Brooklyn Pizza with 12, the Manhattan Skyscraper with 10, and the Staten Island Ferry with 4. As for why it’s a giraffe? The Bronx Zoo.

What was different about Thursday night, however, was the WAY they did it, as they had the Bronx Giraffe stumble in the final feet of the race and then be attacked by a steel-chair wielding orange cow (?) named Moo-Moo.

Why steel chairs, you wonder? Because WWE legends Matt and Jeff Hardy, a.k.a. the Hardy Boyz, were in town to throw out the first pitch before later being shown on the big screen kicking the crap out of the Bronx Giraffe (the whole gag, of course, being that the Yankees are from the Bronx).

After a tough stretch of series the against the Tampa Bay Rays, Atlanta Braves (twice) and Philadelphia Phillies, the Mets will begin a weekend series at the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night.
