The Mets keep finding ways to hit new lows this season

In a season full of disasters, the New York Mets might have experienced their most calamitous on Wednesday during a pair of doubleheader losses to the Chicago Cubs. The two losses put them at 12 games under .500 and in last place in the National League East.

The New York Mets’ doubleheader against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday was effectively a six-hour-long humiliation ritual, as everything unraveled from the play on the field (six fielding errors in one of the game) to the mood of the crowd to the patience of the broadcast team.

The New York Mets season hit rock bottom during a pair of doubleheader losses to the Chicago Cubs

Toward the end of the second game, with the Mets trailing 8-5 in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, the fans started chanting for Pete Alonso, who left the team during the offseason to sign with the Baltimore Orioles. The Mets front office declined to resign Alonso and have had an abysmal season at first base.

As they routinely do, the Mets also created an instantly viral visual after the camera cut to a swath of conga-lining Norwegians right after Dansby Swanson launched a three-run homer, creating the perfect visual of how it must feel to *not* be a Mets fan.

Beloved broadcast trio Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling and Gary Cohen also revolted during the game, each taking their own shot at the organization. Hernandez blasted the front office’s decision to trade Pete Crow Armstrong to the Chicago Cubs in July 2021 in exchange for infielder Javier Báez and right-handed pitcher Trevor Williams as “one of the worst trades in a long time.”

“I mean, what do you say at this point? I mean, this team is in the depths of despair, can’t get starting pitching to hold the other team at bay, struggling with their offense, and now the defense falls apart. SIX infield errors. Unprecedented,” play-by-play man Gary Cohen said of the tam.

“This is the kind of game that causes re-evaluations. You can profess all you want about being confident in the team you have, but this has been nothing short of ugly.”

Darling, a World Series-winning pitcher with the Mets, was also unfiltered in his review of the season so far, which has been virtually over since April.
