Super Bowl LVI marked Michele Tafoya’s final day as an NBC reporter, but it didn’t take long at all for her to announce that she’s already landed a new job in an entirely different field.
Tafoya is getting out of sports and jumping into the political world as she is set to be a co-chair for Army veteran Kendall Qualls who is running for governor in Minnesota.
The 57-year-old sat down with Richard Deitsch of The Athletic and explained that she had reached the point in her life where she wanted to try something new.
“I got to a point in my life where I wanted to try other things, and there are some things that are really important to me,” Tafoya explained.
“This is not to say that sports isn’t an important field, that my job isn’t an important job. But in my position, I was not as free to be as vocal about world events that I’m concerned about.”
The news of Tafoya stepping away from sports after the Super Bowl isn’t exactly news. Back in December, it was reported that Tafoya would be retiring from sports reporting at the conclusion of the NFL season.
Then, in mid-January, NBC announced that the Super Bowl would indeed be Tafoya’s last game on the sideline.
Michele Tafoya’s Interesting Final Months At NBC
It was certainly an eventful NFL season for Tafoya after being absent from the sideline during several NBC Sunday night games. She missed three consecutive Sundays around the Thanksgiving holiday, which the network claimed she was on “bye weeks” and that it gives its announcers time off “repeatedly” in the past.
Some people claim that she simply took weeks off because the games she missed were cold weather situations, while others believe it has a lot to do with her highly discussed appearance on ‘The View’ back in November.
