Gull Lake is scheduled begin the 2026 high school football season in Michigan on August 27. However, the Blue Devils are currently under police investigation and their head coach was placed on administrative leave.
State troopers are looking into an alleged assault that took place and might involve multiple members of the program.
Details surrounding this incident remain under wraps. All we know is that it stems from a high school football camp in June.
The Gull Lake High School football team is not very good.
Kellogg Agricultural High School became Gull Lake High School after the district consolidation in 1965. The current building opened in 2007. It is located in Richland, Michigan. It enrolls approximately 850 students in Grades 9-12.
The Blue Devils play on the Division 3 level of Michigan High School Athletic Association competition. They are not very good.
Gull Lake has not won a game in either of the last two seasons. It is on an 18-game losing streak dating back to Oct. 20, 2023 and lost every game in 2025 by at least two scores. Typically more. The Blue Devils lost every game by a combined score of 427-159.
Jalon Simpson was hired as the head coach prior to 2024 after one season as the defensive coordinator. He has not won a single game since taking over the program and was placed on administrative leave earlier this week.
Michigan state police could press charges on members of the program.
Gull Lake placed is varsity head football coach on paid, non-disciplinary leave amid a district investigation. Simpson confirmed to MLive that he has been instructed to not have “any contact with our about the incident” until the investigation concludes.
According to WOOD-TV News 8, he notified parents and players of the alleged incident in a group chat. His text revealed “two incidents of Title 9 actions” that involved multiple student-athletes. Witnesses would be contacted by the school district.
“I am severely sorry to those of you who are victims and the family’s of these students as this is a huge embarrassment to everyone,” Simpson wrote.
Simpson also released the following statement to News Channel 3:
“I hope this is closed soon, lessons are learned, justice is served. And I am able to get back to growing boys into men on and off the field, and building a culture of a ‘We Before Me’ mentality, and instilling our motto of #FAMiLY throughout the program and community.”
As of this writing, authorities have not released any additional details about the incident or identified any suspects. However, the investigation stems from an alleged assault that involved members of Gull Lake’s varsity football program during a summer camp in June in Oceana County.
The Michigan State Police Sixth District Special Investigation Section will handle the probe because it involves multiple jurisdictions. Once it has completed its investigation, the MSP 6th District post will submit its findings to the prosecutors. The Oceana County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office will then decide whether or not to file criminal charges. Stay tuned.
