While there were plenty of high level college football games going on today featuring some of the nation’s best teams going head to head with undefeated records on the line, that wasn’t the only interesting action available to fans.

In the Big 10, there was a game that took place between Michigan State and Wisconsin. It was a matchup between one team who already fired their head coach this year and a team whose head coach’s massive contract extension may have been a big mistake.

Wisconsin entered the game with a 3-3 record while Michigan State was 2-4 coming into the game.

The game didn’t offer a ton of scoring, but it did have some excitement late in the game.

Wisconsin scored a touchdown with 2:04 left in the game to tie the game at 21. Unfortunately for the Badgers, that left enough time on the clock for Michigan State to drive down the field and set themselves up for a game-winning field goal.

As perfectly as things were set up for the Spartans to get the win, they did their best to waste the opportunity. They barely got the snap off before time ran out and then when they did snap the ball, they ran an ill-advised fake field goal instead of kicking the 46-yarder for the win.

They threw an interception, sending the game to overtime.

Michigan State’s awful fan field goal nearly cost them a win

Luckily for the Spartans, the strange decision didn’t prove as costly as it could have been.

Michigan State got the ball first in overtime and scored to take the lead. Wisconsin answered with a touchdown of their own. On Wisconsin’s second OT possession, they fumbled, giving Michigan State another chance to win.

This time, the Spartans took advantage with a 27-yard touchdown pass to win the game.

I don’t know what Michigan State was thinking at the end of regulation, but luckily for them, they left with the win anyway.
