Gonzaga arrived in Detroit on Wednesday evening ahead of their showdown with Purdue in the Sweet 16, and they inadvertently caused a bit of a stir courtesy of a Michigan state rep who claimed the buses they were using were actually filled with “illegal invaders.”

The Sweet 16 is slated to kick off on Thursday night in the four cities that are hosting the teams who are hoping to keep their March Madness dreams alive by punching their ticket to the Final Four in Phoenix next week.

The squads hailing from the Midwest Region will be facing off at Little Caesars Arena, which will host a Friday night session featuring the showdown between the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Purdue Boilermakers that will precede the contest featuring the Creighton Blue Jays and the Tennessee Volunteers.

That brings us to Matt Maddock, a Republican representing Michigan’s 51st District in the state’s House of Representatives.

On Wednesday night, the man who claims he’s “Ranked Most Conservative State Representative” in his Twitter bio posted a picture of a trio of buses at  Detroit Metropolitan Airport along with an alarmist caption that asserted they’d been “loaded up with illegal invaders” while asking “Anyone have any idea where they’re headed with their police escort?”

The answer to that question ended up being “The hotel where Gonzaga is staying during the Sweet 16,” as people quickly noted the police were actually escorting the Bulldogs men’s basketball team who’d gotten off the plane in the photo Maddock posted as opposed to the “illegal invaders” he’d asserted they were reserved for.

Maddock promptly realized his error and apologized for the mis—aaaaaaand I’m kidding. Of course he didn’t.

He actually decided to double down and promised to investigate the matter in a tweet that was so on the nose I had to double-check if I was looking at a parody account.

I eagerly await the results of that inquiry.
