Hinds lost to Jones by only one point during the junior college football game in Mississippi on Thursday. Its game-tying extra point was marred by a controversial unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the potential game-winning touchdown.
The kick missed wide right.
Some college football fans do not think the penalty was warranted. Others think it comes down to the player’s intent.
Jones pulled the upset over Hinds.
I do not blame you if you are not familiar with the junior college football scene in the Magnolia State. This is for real sickos only.
Hinds Community College is located in Raymond, Mississippi, about 20 miles outside of downtown Jackson. It enrolls more than 8,000 students on the main campus with more than 12,000 students across all six branches as the largest community college in the state. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 7 in the latest NJCAA Division I Football Poll prior to Thursday night. They were set to play in the MACCC Championship with a win or a loss.
Jones Community College is located in Ellisville, Mississippi. It enrolls more than 5,000 students. The Bobcats are not currently ranked. They entered Thursday’s game below .500 at 4-5.
Needless to say, Hinds was a big favorite over Jones. But sometimes that is not how the cookie crumbles.
The visiting Bobcats scored 21 points during the second quarter to take a 28-20 lead over the Bulldogs at halftime. They continued to score during the second half and took a 43-34 lead with three minutes and 53 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Hinds took back over on offense at the 35-yard-line with a chance to win the game in regulation or force overtime. It drove the length of the field to find the end zone with only three seconds left on the clock. Jaylon Ruffin threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Kiandre Terry. Jones held a one-point lead after the touchdown.
An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty led to a missed extra point.
The Bulldogs had a decision to make. They could either go for two and the win, or kick an extra point to (likely) force overtime.
Initially, it was the former. Jones was going to go for two. The game was going to be decided in regulation.
However, Terry was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct on the touchdown catch. He spiked the ball at/near the defensive back and flexed in his face. Here is how it looked on the broadcast:

The Hinds WR Kiandre Terry was flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct for spiking the ball celebrating, which lead to the pushed back missed PAT.

The PAT was moved back as a result of penalty. It missed wide right. The Bobcats recovered the subsequent onside kick. Game over.
Did the officials make the correct decision to penalize Terry for his celebration or were the Bulldogs robbed of an opportunity? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
