Eli Drinkwitz did not care that Missouri was already going to beat Kansas with 30 seconds remaining in the college football game. The Tigers only needed to take a knee but their head coach decided to throw to the end zone.

He showed intentional disrespect for the Jayhawks after a hostile week between the two cross-state rivals.

One of the most volatile rivalries in college football reached a its boiling point on Friday. Drinkwitz had enough.

Kansas mocked Missouri before and during the college football rivalry game.

The Kansas Jayhawks and the Missouri Tigers first played each other on the gridiron in 1891. Although the rivalry game took a brief hiatus when the latter moved to the SEC, it was renewed in 2025 and 2026. They will play again in 2031 and 2032.

Missouri currently leads the all-time series record 56-50-4. Kansas lost on the road last year and at home this year.

In the days leading up to this year’s edition of the Border War, the Jayhawks released a hype video that references the Tigers’ ties to slavery. As you could imagine, it did not go over well with the visitors. The hatred between the two sides was intensified. Things got heated during before warmups.

Missouri defensive tackle Marquis Gracial flipped double birds to the Kansas student section as soon as he got inside the stadium. Running back Jamal Roberts did the same.

The crowd was rocking at kickoff.

And then it was war. Literally. Neither team scored during the first quarter. It was tied at 14 at halftime. Tensions were high.

The Jayhawks celebrated a forced fumble by beating up a dummy wearing a Tigers jersey on the sideline.

The savagery ended up backfiring during the second half. They could not keep pace with their opponents.

Eli Drinkwitz tried to run up the score.

Missouri caught fire during the second half. Quarterback Austin Simmons finished with 292 yards passing and three touchdowns without an interception. Roberts — who gave the middle finger to the student section before the game — ran for 125 yards and a touchdown in Ahmad Hardy’s absence. The Tigers went on to win 38-21.

Eli Drinkwitz decided to keep his foot on the gas during the fourth quarter. Missouri was up by 17 with 34 seconds remaining. A kneel down would’ve ended the game but quarterback Matt Zollers threw to the end zone on the second-to-last play. The head coach said after the game that he was trying to score another touchdown.

Kansas played the racially-motivated hype video in the stadium during pregame.

Drinkwitz found the whole thing to be “embarrassing” and “uncalled for” so he tried to “embarrass” his opponent by throwing deep when the game was already out of hand.

He also responded to the disrespectful turnover celebration, which involved the dummy wearing a Tigers jersey.

“How’d that work when we punched back!?!”

Fortunately, Drinkwitz and his staff did a great job of preventing the postgame shenanigans from getting out of hand.

Statement made. Kansas will have its next opportunity for revenge on Missouri in five years. Drinkwitz and the Tigers own the border. They defeated the Jayhawks in back-to-back years.
