Beer Producer Carlsberg Keeps Getting Shafted On Marketing Because Mo Salah, Who Doesn’t Drink, Always Wins The Award They Sponsor

Even if you don’t closely follow the Premier League, you’ve likely heard of Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah by now, as he’s spent the last half-decade-or-so establishing a legacy as one of the greatest players in the history of the Premier League.

Over the holiday weekend, in a 4-2 win over Saudi Arabia-backed Newcastle United, Salah had two goals and an assist in yet another breathtaking display. The goals put Salah over the 150 mark with Liverpool, making him the fifth-ever player to do so with one club, joining a list that includes Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Harry Kane, and Sergio Aguero.

While Salah’s historic excellence is undoubtedly a delight for both Liverpool Football Club and its fans, there may actually be one entity involved with the operation that’s none too thrilled, and that’s Carlsberg.

Carlsberg, a beer company that’s worked with Liverpool for a long time and was even the primary sponsor of the club’s kit from 1992 to 2010, is the sponsor of LFC’s Player of the Match award, which is given to the best player on the team at the end of each game.

Given that Salah is a devout Muslim and therefore does not drink alcohol, however, all of his Player of the Match content has been *without* the Carlsberg branding out of respect to the 31-year-old Egyptian. And due to his almost otherworldly dominance, it’s happened quite a lot.

Thanks to Salah’s play this season and the performance of Liverpool in general, Jurgen Klopp’s side find themselves at the top of the Premier League table to kick off 2024, sitting three points above second-place Aston Villa and five points above three-time defending champions Manchester City, who have both a game in hand and the oil state of the United Arab Emirates funding them.
