Ja Morant is more video game character than he is an actual human basketball player. That statement gets tossed around quite a bit, but given the season Morant is having, and the ridiculous highlight-reel he’s already put together, it’s true in his case.
The 22-year-old is having an MVP caliber season, and if he doesn’t win MVP, he’ll likely take home honors of Most Improved Player.
While Morant may be in the midst of a ridiculously good year, one NBA executive isn’t buying into all of the hype.
ESPN’s Tim Bontemps put together a survey asking 15 NBA scouts and executives to rank six of the league’s point guards. One anonymous exec from the Eastern Conference made quite the statement about Morant.
“It’s weird to say this, but I don’t think [Morant] is quite as good as his public perception,” the East executive said. “If you put Shai [Gilgeous-Alexander] on that Memphis team, he could potentially be doing a lot of the same things.”
Ja Morant Is In The Middle Of A Spectacular Campaign
The word “potentially” is carrying a lot of weight there.
Gilgeous-Alexander is an extremely talented player, and sure he could ‘potentially’ be doing what Morant is, but Morant is actually, you know, doing it.
Morant is averaging 27.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game this season. For comparison, Gilgeous-Alexander is averaging 24.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per contest on a pretty bad Thunder squad.
The Grizzlies’ point guard averaged 33 points per game in the month of February and is averaging over 28 points per game in the month of March.
The survey specifically asked who is the most desirable point guard on a rookie contract in the NBA. Morant finished second among point guards with four first-place votes, while Luka Doncic led the way with 11 first-place votes.
