Nebraska lost yet another college football game in gut-wrenching fashion on Saturday. Fans expressed their frustration with the inability to win close games by throwing various objects (trash) at and onto the field.
It was an ugly end to an incredible evening in Lincoln.
This is not a good sign for Matt Rhule. The fastest way to get fired as a college football coach is to lose the fanbase.
Washington won the college football game.
Although it seemed unlikely that the Cornhuskers would play their way into the College Football Playoff, their national championship hopes were still within reach on Saturday morning. They had only two losses in the regular season and could still run the table to sneak into the field of 12.
Not only was it a big game, it was Halloween. Nebraska decided to go with the Black Out theme and the fanbase delivered.
Memorial Stadium was absolutely rocking for the 416th consecutive sellout. Washington committed SIX false start penalties because of the crowd noise. The Huskies couldn’t even hear themselves think. Loud would be an understatement.
The Huskers fanbase is known to be one of the most passionate fanbases in college sports, if not the most passionate. It does not matter if their team is good. They show up and the show out.
The Huskers fanbase is also known to be one of the nicest fanbases in college sports, if not the nicest. They want to make sure that everybody has a fantastic experience in Lincoln. They are always respectful toward their opponent and toward the officials.
Unfortunately, their frustration boiled over on Saturday. Washington scored 14 points in the last 90 seconds of the game. Nebraska blew a lead to lose yet another one-possession game in the fourth quarter. It played its way out of the College Football Playoff.
Nebraska fans threw objects onto the field in frustration.
The sold-out crowd at Memorial Stadium was devastated by the loss. Understandably so.
Down by four, the Huskies took over on offense with four minutes and 29 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. They drove 81 yards on 12 plays in two minutes and 59 seconds to take a 10-7 lead. Wide receiver Chris Lawson made two awesome catches.
This Chris Lawson sequence, tho 🔥

Although Nebraska was able to get a quick field goal on its next possession, it could not recover the onside kick and lost. Fans responded to the loss by throwing objects (trash) onto the field.
Last time I was here(1998) Nebraska fans could not have been friendlier. Tonight they were throwing whatever they could get their hands on when the game didn't go their way pic.twitter.com/TLB2i2QdfU

A majority of the projectiles came from the student section, but the poor behavior was not limited to the student section.

On-field staffers were forced to clean up their mess.

For the Cornhuskers to act out in this way is a testament to their frustration with the college football program and head coach Matt Rhule. They finally snapped.
