Netflix has found tons of success with exclusive, behind-the-scenes sports documentaries in recent years, and their latest one is set to involve Major League Baseball and the Boston Red Sox.

On Wednesday, February 7, Netflix announced they are going to be producing a pair of documentaries about the iconic Boston MLB club: one that chronicles the upcoming 2024 season (to be released next year) and another telling the story of the 2004 team, which famously broke the “Curse of the Bambino” and won the franchise’s first World Series title in 86 years.

“Netflix is teaming up with Major League Baseball for two new projects about the Boston Red Sox,” the streamer announced on Wednesday.

“For the first time, Netflix will follow an MLB team over the course of a full season. This docuseries will feature unprecedented access to Red Sox players, coaches and executives throughout the 2024 season (premiering in 2025).”

“And later this year, Netflix will premiere a brand-new documentary looking back at the historic 2004 Red Sox season, which culminated in the franchise’s first World Series title in 86 years.”

That ’04 team not only broke the Curse of the Bambino but also featured a bevy of beloved Red Sox players such as Pedro Martinez, Tim Wakefield, Curt Schilling, Jason Varitek, Kevin Youkilis, Johnny Damon, Manny Ramirez, and David Ortiz. The team also famously came back from a 3-0 deficit in the ALCS against the New York Yankees, their heated rivals.

Netflix’s timing of their documentaries with the Red Sox is certainly interesting considering that Liverpool Football Club, who are also owned by John Henry and Fenway Sports Group, also recently announced that they would be releasing a behind-the-scenes docuseries this year.

While Netflix did not provide an official release date, the documentary about the 2004 Red Sox will be released this year, likely in celebration of the 20th anniversary. Since 2004, the Red Sox have gone on to win the World Series in 2007, 2013, and 2018.

In recent years, Netflix has found success with sports docuseries such as Last Chance U (college football and basketball), Break Point (tennis), Full Swing (golf), Drive to Survive (Formula One), Quarterback (NFL), and more.
