East and Monroe High Schools have been banned from the playoffs.

East High/World of Inquiry beat defending New York high school football state champion Monroe over the weekend in playoff action. Hours later, it was disqualified from the postseason.

A massive brawl erupted after the final play of the game. It will end both teams’ pursuit of a title.

The two foes met for a Section V semifinal game. East High seemingly booked a ticket to the Section V Class B championship game with a victory. That is no longer the case.

Monroe hosted East on Saturday afternoon in the semifinal round. They entered the game at 8-0 with hopes of defending their 2025 state championship crown.

East, meanwhile, was 5-2 and ranked 53rd in the state. The winner would advance to the championship game vs. Honeoye Falls-Lima with a chance to move onto the regional round of action.

East succeeded in pulling the upset. They won the game by a touchdown. A celebration started after the final play, but it quickly turned ugly.

East has been eliminated from the postseason.

James Johnson of the Democrat & Chronicle says both teams will be punished for the brawl. East will get hit the hardest with a removal from the playoffs after knocking off the defending champs.

Fights between players after a Section V football playoff game Nov. 7 have apparently resulted in the disqualification of both East High/World of Inquiry and Monroe from the Class B tournament…

There were altercations from one 30-yard line to another. Coaches, officials and Rochester City School District personnel pulled players from piles, only to have to do the same elsewhere on the field. Fans came on to the field, adding themselves into the mix.

Monroe principal Jason Muhammad said the school’s athletic director received an e-mail from Section V just hours after the game and fights that said both teams were disqualified from the tournament. East High athletic director Eric Robinson had no comment but plans to reach out to Section V officials.

Johnson writes that Honeoye Falls-Lima could now be awarded a Section V championship without having to play an opponent.

East, at this point in time, will not have the opportunity to continue its title pursuit after pulling off the playoff upset.
