The NFL played its first-ever game in Australia on Thursday night (Friday morning). San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams fans spent as much as $600 for front-row seats that delivered an abysmal view of the on-field action.
They couldn’t see the game!
It is unclear if the NFL promoted the tickets in an honest manner or if the fans were bamboozled. Either way, the front row at an Aussie rules football stadium is not the same as front row in the United States.
The San Francisco 49ers played the Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
As the National Football League continues to expand its international audience, the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers traveled to Melbourne, Australia for the first-ever professional American football game played on the other side of the world. There was a lot made about their individual schedules. None of it mattered at kickoff on Friday morning.
A close game during the first half very quickly swung in favor of the 49ers when the Rams failed to score during the second half. San Francisco defeated Los Angeles 27-7.
The game itself was a stinker. The atmosphere was electric.
More than 100,000 fans packed inside Melbourne Cricket Ground. It was the seventh most-attended regular season game in NFL history.
This is what it looks like in Melbourne for the 49ers vs. Rams.

It was an incredible visual.
These guys had a great time:

However, the game was so boring during the second half that fans decided to throw paper airplanes.
I’m not sure if this is an NFL tradition, but I think all the Australian’s who have been drinking since 7am are drunk and bored so they’re all throwing paper planes 😅🏈#NFL #Melbourne pic.twitter.com/kxrRCLlplx

That didn’t take away from the energy of the crowd.

I, personally, would prefer less international games but the NFL is trying to expand its audience and the first-ever game played in Australia was an overwhelming success— outside of the lopsided final score. Most fans seemed to have a great time.
Fans who bought front-row seats to the Australia game were sorely disappointed.
There was one glaring issue with the configuration of the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It was not built for the NFL.
Aussie rules football games use the entire field.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground measures ~190 yards by ~162 yards. The NFL playing surface uses only 6,400 square yards, including the end zones. It did not use the entire grass surface. The narrow rectangle was centered inside the enormous oval.

As a result of the size discrepancy, the nosebleed seats actually had a better view than the front-row seats. NFL fans paid as much as $600 USD to sit front row. They were mostly unable to see the field from their vantage point. Especially behind the end zones.
The first seat of the front row was located way beyond the end zone. A large safety net was also in the way.

It was not that obstructed but fans who sat front row behind the goal posts were not able to see the action.

To pay that kind of money for such a poor view is unfortunate. To be right there in the action during such a historic event is still pretty cool. All-in-all, the Australia game was a success. We just don’t need more of them.
