With all the information we now have on football’s long-term physical effects, it’s not uncommon to see players step away from NFL careers earlier than expected.

Stars such as Calvin Johnson and Patrick Willis shocked fans when they chose to walk away from the game with most considered a lot of tread left on their tires.

But few people would’ve turned their heads had they heard that free agent tight end Foster Moreau was stepping away from the game.

Moreau, a 25-year-old, was drafted by the then Oakland Raiders in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. In his four NFL seasons, he’s proven a nice No. 2 to star tight end Darren Waller.

Moreau finally became a free agent this offseason. And most believed he’d have absolutely no issue finding a new home.

But now all that has changed.

NFL Tight End Foster Moreau Shares News Of Cancer Diagnosis

Moreau made a stunning announcement on Wednesday when he revealed he was stepping away from the NFL. But it’s not for the usually reasons. Instead, he says he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma during routine medical testing for the New Orleans Saints.

“Through somewhat of a miraculous process, this free agency period has been life-changing for me,” Moreau tweeted. “During a routine physical conducted by the Saints’ medical team down in New Orleans, I’ve come to learn that I have Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and will be stepping away from football

“At this time to fight a new opponent: Cancer. I’m grateful for the support and thankful for [the] people who have stood firm with me. There hasn’t been a single step I’ve taken without hundreds of people lighting the path before me, and I will continue to seek their guidance.

“That being said, I’ll go kick this thing’s ass and get back to doing what I love! AMDG!”

Moreau’s announcement shocked fans, who quickly sent their support.

Coincidentally, this isn’t the first time the New Orleans Saints have dealt with this type of story. Team doctors previously diagnosed a heart condition in long snapper Jon Dorenbos after a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Thankfully, it sounds like they caught Moreau’s condition early, and hopefully that leads to a full recovery.
