Drake recently took another L in his war with Kendrick Lamar after his foe announced he’d been tapped to perform at the upcoming Super Bowl, and an NFL source has pushed back against a podcaster who claims Drizzy has declined the chance to do the same in the past.
By now, I feel like most people are familiar with the beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar that escalated earlier this year before the latter brought it to a decisive end by dropping the kill shot that was “Not Like Us.”
The rapper at the receiving end of one of the most brutal (and catchy) diss tracks in hip-hop history eventually waved the white flag before K. Dot took a victory lap by playing it five times in a row at a concert he threw in June.
2024 was already The Year of Kendrick, but last weekend, we learned his 2025 will also get off to a pretty solid start when the rapper announced he’ll be the headliner at the halftime show at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans on February 9th.
It’s hard to imagine Drake was thrilled to hear about that development, but after the news broke, Jamil “Mal” Clay (a longtime Drizzy loyalist) asserted the Toronto native had previously and repeatedly turned down the opportunity to take the stage at The Big Game, saying, “Drake has been offered this Super Bowl show for some years now and has turned it down. Probably four years.”
Clay declined to say where he’d learned that tidbit of information, although it’s safe to assume it came directly from Drake’s camp based on his relationship with the rapper.
However, an unnamed NFL source who spoke to Bloomberg asserted that claim was a “blatant lie” while telling the outlet Drake has not received an official invite since the league hired Jay-Z’s Roc Nation to produce the halftime show in 2019.
At first glance, Drake would be a pretty natural fit for the event given his status as an international superstar with an impressive catalog of No. 1 hits, so it’s kind of surprising to hear he’s never even been a serious candidate.
