The Houston Texans announced they hired Lovie Smith as their new head coach. Lovie has extensive experience coaching in the NFL where he’s been coaching in various roles since 1996 with a brief stint back in college football. Texans GM Nick Caserio decided Lovie was the man for the job and that’s that, right? Nope, we’re still talking about it…
Hiring Lovie Smith immediately triggered a response from the legal team of Brian Flores who is currently suing the NFL. After Lovie Smith was hired, lawyers for Brian Flores made a very bold claim that “it is obvious that the only reason Mr. Flores was not selected was his decision to stand up against racial inequality across the NFL.”
Given that the legal proceedings are only just unfolding, it would’ve been pretty unwise for Texans GM Nick Caserio to say too much. However, he came out and explicitly stated that the Flores lawsuit “didn’t affect us (Houston) at all” when making their hiring decision. Texans GM Nick Caserio had this to say about Brian Flores in that clip from SportsTalk 790 above:
“I would say it didn’t affect us at all. Speaking specific to Brian, I’ve known Brian a long time personally and professionally. I have a lot of respect for Brian as a coach and a person. He was a part of this process. He’s been a good coach in this league for a number of years. Part of my responsibility was to spend time with as many quality candidates as possible and Brian was one of those.”
