Nicolai von Dellingshausen came painfully close to drilling a hole-in-one on the 14th hole at the British Masters on Thursday. His shot from the tee box not only hit the pin, but it then trickled down to the edge of the cup.

Unfortunately, it appeared to get stuck in a pitch mark on the green, stopping just inches away from an ace. Golf fans couldn’t believe their eyes.

The British Masters kicked off at The Belfry on Thursday with stars like Justin Rose and Edoardo Molinari headlined the event, but it was von Dellingshausen who had the shot of Day 1.

While trekking through the back nine of his first round, the German golfer came oh-so-close to sinking his tee shot.

“Oh! Very nearly an ace. How did that not go in?” the broadcast crew asked. “It finished dead in its own pitch mark, didn’t it?”

The disgust wasn’t only limited to the booth. Viewers couldn’t believe the ace didn’t drop.

Here was the immediate reaction to Nicolai von Dellingshausen’s near hole-in-one.

“Robbery. Grand theft robbery,” one tweet read.

Another fan asked, “How unlucky is this?”

At the time of this writing, von Dellingshausen finds himself in the top 15 on the leaderboard. He was able to birdie the 14th hole and currently sits at -2 on the day.
