North Carolina A&T defeated Elon during the college football game in Greensboro on Saturday. An all-out brawl ensued.
Multiple punches were thrown!
It was an unfortunate ending to a college football game that was decided by only three points late in the fourth quarter. Fortunately, no injuries were reported by either team.
Elon played at North Carolina A&T on Homecoming.
Neither Elon nor North Carolina A&T are very good this season. Both teams currently sit near the middle of the Coastal Athletic Association standings with an identical overall record of 4-5. They played each other in Greensboro on Saturday.
It also happened to be Homecoming! Regardless of the record or the opponent, a Homecoming game is always going to be well-attended at an HBCU. Campus is buzzing. There is an extra motivation to get the win.
Especially this year. North Carolina A&T is celebrating its 100th-anniversary Centennial Homecoming, which is widely known as the ‘Greatest Homecoming on Earth.’ You can’t lose on the 100th anniversary!
Once the morning’s festivities had finished, a sold-out crowd packed into Truist Stadium for the football game. They witnessed a low-scoring defensive battle.
The Aggies finally put the first points on the board with a field goal during the second quarter. The Phoenix tied things up early in the second half and took a 10-3 lead on its next offensive possession. North Carolina A&T ultimately tied the game at 10 with 31 seconds remaining in the third quarter. It hit the eventual game-winning field goal with just over two minutes left in the fourth.
The college football game ended with an ugly brawl.
The celebration was on as soon as the clock hit zero. And then it got ugly.
Multiple Elon players wandered over to North Carolina A&T’s bench to deliver some choice words, which started a small scuffle that very quickly escalated to something much bigger. Nearly every player on both teams got involved in the melee. Some of them ended up on the ground while their teammates tried to help them from getting hurt. Others continued to throw haymakers.
If that was not bad enough, the brawl spilled onto the benches and onto the track. Here is how it looked from the stands:

Here is how it looked on the broadcast:
The good news is that nobody was injured. The bad news is that both teams are likely to face consequences.
Because Elon started the fight, it will receive a harsher punishment than North Carolina A&T. The CAA has yet to provide a statement on the incident as of this writing. The conference will review the footage in the coming days and go from there.
