There’s an old saying in sports.
When you win, say nothing. When you lose, say less.
North Carolina Central has either never heard this cliche — or doesn’t give a damn about applying it.
After destroying Coppin State, 91-43, in a MEAC quarterfinal matchup, the team’s website featured the most over-the-top game recap — one that oozes excess confidence.
NORFOLK, Va. – By now, North Carolina Central is way past the point of having to make any sort of statement.
So let’s call Wednesday’s 91-43 annihilation of Coppin State in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal a simple reaffirmation of the formidable task the rest of the league – especially those who made a mild threat to end the Eagles’ unbeaten streak during the regular season – has of dethroning the defending conference champions.
Jordan Parks posted a double-double of 29 points and 10 rebounds as the Eagles did what they’re supposed to do – crush any hope of an upset by a team that played its way into the final eight. And remember, Coppin State came one three-pointer shy of posting a win in Durham back in January.
Whoa.
There’s a reason North Carolina Central is so confident. The Eagles have won their last 35 games against conference opponents and are 46-2 in league games over the past three years.
But still … wasn’t the 48-point annihilation enough? Was it entirely necessary to throw salt in the wound as well?
On a very related note, you are all welcome to join me on the bandwagon of Central’s next opponent, if for no other reason than to see what the team’s coverage of a humbling loss would look like.
