North Carolina High School Football Game Is Stuck In Overtime Because Fans Threw Punches At Police Amid Brawl

The high school football game between Millbrook and Rolesville, which began on Friday night, is not over. Officials in North Carolina decided not to play overtime because multiple fights broke out among the fans in the crowd.

It is unclear as to when the extra period will continue.

When the high school football game is allowed to resume, these two teams will each trade possessions until one is unable to score. That could last anywhere between two and 30 minutes.

Millbrook and Rolesville went to overtime.

Millbrook Magnet High School is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Rolesville High School is located 12 miles to the northeast in the greater Raleigh suburb of Rolesville, North Carolina. Both schools enroll more than 2,300 students in Grades 9-12.

Therefore, the Wildcats and the Rams both compete in Class 8A of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) football alignment for 2026. They are both ranked in the Top 25.

Unfortunately, we do not know who is the better team… yet. The game went to overtime tied at 10-10 but the officiating crew decided not to continue.

The high school football game remains suspended at the end of regulation with no clear answer on when it might continue. However, we do know that it won’t be Monday— which would be the simple answer.

Rolesville already has a another makeup game scheduled for Monday. Its game against Richmond was halted with 5:15 remaining in the second quarter due to lightning on Sept. 4. Richmond and Rolesville are going to finish the last ~30 minutes on Monday.

Therefore, Millbrook will have to wait even longer to play the remaining overtime period. The Rams and the Wildcats will have to pick right back up where they left off at a later date.

The North Carolina high school football game was suspended due to fights.

This bizarre suspension was the result of poor behavior in the crowd. Play was halted around 9:20 p.m. with approximately eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Spectators and fans were asked to leave the stadium. A capacity crowd was told to exit.

Officials and administrators came to that decision together. They chose to clear out the stadium because of situation behind the scoreboard near the concessions stand. And, according to ABC 11, it was not the only fight to break out amongst the fans. They kept swinging on each other — and police officers ! — in the parking lot.

After about 30 minutes, play resumed. Only the two teams, coaches, officials, school and city personnel and media remained. The spectators were not allowed back in the stadium. The stands were completely empty.

Rolesville actually held a 10-0 lead over Millbrook when the game was paused. Millbrook stormed back to tie the game at 10 after it was allowed to continue. The Wildcats took a knee with 27 seconds remaining. The game went to overtime.

However, overtime did not happen. Yet…

Officials met with administrators from both schools to discuss the situation. After about five minutes of deliberation, they decided to call it a night. The game would not continue. Both teams should go home.
