It was an up-and-down season for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. First-year head coach Marcus Freeman went through a roller coaster in his first year at the helm.

The season started with consecutive losses to Ohio State, in which they played well, and Marshall, in which they played terribly. Freeman was almost immediately on the hot seat in the minds of many Notre Dame fans after that loss to Marshall.

But, they turned it around, winning nine of their last eleven games to finish 9-4. And, Freeman landed a great recruiting class, ranked in the top ten of the 247 rankings.

Recently, though, longtime Notre Dame assistant and former Irish quarterback Tommy Rees moved on to take the offensive coordinator job at Alabama.

But, a big-time candidate has emerged to take his place. And, it would be a home run hire for Freeman and the Irish.

Leftwich, ironically, starred at Marshall before getting drafted by the Jaguars. After a middling NFL career, he got into coaching and recently won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tom Brady in 2020. But, he was recently fired from the Buccaneers after a disappointing season.

Still, this would be a home run hire. The 43-year-old can clearly coach, can sell his connections to Tom Brady, and would instantly have credibility with recruits.

I’m sure Notre Dame fans hope Freeman can pull this off.
