Elyria Catholic defeated Padua during the high school football game in Ohio on Friday. Unfortunately, the incredible defensive battle ended with a blatant dirty play.
The officials threw a flag but the unfortunate incident is deserving of suspension.
A high school football player dove at the knees of an opponent during victory formation. That is unacceptable.
Elyria Catholic beat Padua by seven.
Elyria Catholic High School is a private Catholic school (obviously) in Elyria, Ohio, a western suburb of Cleveland. It enrolls approximately 540 students in Grades 9-12. Padua Franciscan High School is also a private Catholic school in Parma, Ohio, a southern suburb of Cleveland. It enrolls approximately 800 students in Grades 9-12.
As smaller schools, both the Panthers and the Bruins compete in Region 10 of Division III competition in the Buckeye State. Both high school football programs are ranked outside of the top 300 with three losses each.
The former handed the latter their third on Friday. Donovan Shumpert scored both touchdowns for Elyria Catholic and its defense came up with FIVE fourth-down stops inside the 25-yard-line to secure a 14-7 win.
Padua was down 14-0 at halftime but finally got on the board with 3:20 remaining in the fourth quarter. And then it got interesting.
The Bruins attempted a squib kick on the ensuing kickoff. Freshman Mason Hans recovered the kick for the Panthers. Hans also played the first defensive snaps of his high school career on the next possession. He sealed the victory with an interception.
Both teams are now 3-3. Elyria is 1-0 in the region. Unfortunately, Padua did not lose with grace.
A dirty cheap shot spoiled an amazing high school football game.
Elyria Catholic took back over on offense after Hans’ interception. There was less than a minute remaining on the clock. It eventually ticked down… 5… 4… 3… The offense snapped the ball one last time.
However, instead of letting the Panthers take a knee out of victory formation to end the game, a Bruins defender decided to make a play. Except he didn’t. His intention seemed to be malicious. As soon as the ball was snapped, the defensive end dove at the legs of an upright offensive lineman.
The player in question did not try and go after the ball. Nor did he attempt to rush the quarterback. He dove head-first at the knees.
This may be the worst cheap shot I’ve ever seen. Just disgusting. Kudos to the coaches for addressing it immediately but if we’re taking shots below the knee on a victory formation then we’ve completely lost the plot.

Fortunately, the situation did not escalate further and the offensive lineman was not injured by the dirty play. The officials threw a flag. The clock expired. Both teams shook hands. No punches were thrown. There was not even any pushing or shoving.
Even still, the Padua defensive player should be punished beyond the flag. If the OHSAA does not suspend him, his coach should sit him out for at least one quarter of the next game. His actions must be used as a learning lesson on how to lose with grace.
