The Ohio State Buckeyes began their 2026 college football season in unique fashion at Ohio State.
Not because the Buckeyes took on MAC foe Ball State, but because they celebrated their annual Senior Day, a tradition that is normally reserved for the final home game of the season.
To make matters even more interesting, Ohio State explained that the decision to move Senior Day from the last home game to the first home game came down to a strange reason.

Ohio State Moved Its Senior Day Because It Didn’t Want To Lose To Michigan At Home
While they won in 2025, the Buckeyes have lost four of the last five games in their legendary rivalry with Michigan. That includes two straight games in Ohio Stadium.
The matchup with the Wolverines is traditionally the final game of the season for each, meaning that it would have coincided with Senior Day for the Buckeyes.
Not wanting to have any potential distractions this time around, the Ohio State head coach decided to move Senior Day up to Week 1.
“When we look at all the things that go on that weekend, the way things have changed, there are some things that we thought about,” Day told reporters in August. “The first thing was, we want to keep much of the focus on The Game, and the more distractions we have — there’s already enough distractions during that week — so this was just one more thing that we felt like we could move.”
Honestly, the logic checks out. But if you’re Michigan, you have to feel pretty good about how you’re already in the heads of the Buckeyes.
