Ohio State picked up a huge win over the weekend against Big Ten rival Penn State. The Buckeyes defense gave a fantastic performance, holding the Nittany Lions to just six points over the first 59 minutes of action.

One local newspaper attempted to highlight that Ohio State success with a next-day headline. Unfortunately, the wording caught readers by surprise.

The showdown provided viewers with a No. 3 vs. No. 7 matchup, seeing the winner gain an inside track to the conference championship game. That winner would be OSU, who proved too much for their Top 10 foe.

The Buckeyes took a 10-6 lead into the halftime break before widening the margin to 20-6 in the fourth quarter. Penn State would add its first and only touchdown of the game with less than 30 seconds left in regulation to make the score a bit closer than the game actually was.

The strong showing led one Ohio State newspaper outlet to key in on the defense with an awe-inducing headline.

“Ohio State rides ‘D’ to win,” the newspaper title read. Fans had some fun with the unintentional phrasing.

“Penn State couldn’t deliver the O they needed, though.”

“Penn State could not get penetration.”

“This is not how I would have phrased that…”

“Oh, someone’s been WAITING to drop that headline and hope no one notices.”

Unfortunately, everyone seemed to notice as it’s been blasted across social media this week. The poor wording doesn’t take away from the Buckeyes’ win, though.

Ohio State is now 7-0 on the season with two wins over Top 10 foes. They’ll look to ride this momentum over the second half of the year in hopes of making another College Football Playoff appearance.
