Ole Miss basketball’s leading rebounder was ejected during an ugly home loss to South Carolina on Saturday afternoon. It is likely that the Southeastern Conference will issue a suspension for the incident that let to his early exit from the college basketball game.

Allen Flanigan, who averages 15.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, let his temper get the best of him. The Rebels were losing by more than 10 points at the time and the frustration amongst the home team was palpable. Especially for Gamecocks guard Zach Davis. Literally.

Flanigan threw a vicious elbow to his head while crossing through the paint. It caught Davis right in the face and sent him to the floor.

Officials initially called a foul on the floor. Upon further review, there was no way to argue that it was not intentional. Thus, Flanigan was called for a Flagrant 2 foul and removed from the contest. Rightfully so.

Ole Miss went on to lose the game 72-59. Davis finished 14 points and nine rebounds in the loss after getting rocked.

Flanigan has been a crucial part of the Rebels’ success this season and he had 11 points with three boards before being tossed. His absence was felt down the stretch and it is likely that he will be forced to miss an additional contest as result of his Flagrant 2. Ole Miss moved to the wrong side of the March Madness bubble with the loss and it will be detrimental to their chances of getting back on track if Flanigan is not on the floor due to a suspension.

In the meantime, even though his fate is likely sealed on account of his violent elbow, all he can do is wait to hear from the league. A punishment will presumably come early next week.
