Pete Golding revealed how he kept Trinidad Chambliss at Ole Miss.
Trinidad Chambliss will be the starting quarterback at Ole Miss in 2026. That was not always a guarantee. The Rebels fought many battles to keep him put. A negative recruiting pitch helped do the trick.
Chambliss announced his intentions to return in January soon after the team’s College Football Playoff run ended. He did so despite massive changes in Oxford.
About a month earlier, head coach Lane Kiffin bailed for LSU. He left campus before the postseason. Pete Golding took over and nearly took the Rebels to the national title game. He made sure nothing would prevent him from bringing his signal caller back.
Ole Miss negatively recruited to keep Trinidad Chambliss.
Golding admitted it at SEC Media Days on Wednesday. Kiffin pushed for Chambliss to follow him to LSU. The interest was real.
Kiffin gave him his first big shot after finding the signal caller at D2 Ferris State. He brought him into join the quarterback competition with Austin Simmons in 2025.
Simmons initially won the job. Chambliss took over after an injury. The rest is history.
Chambliss was the most prolific passer in the SEC. He threw for nearly 4,000 yards in 15 games to lead the Rebels to 13 wins. He finished eighth in the Heisman trophy. This year, he expects to be a frontrunner.
The signal caller had loyalty to both Kiffin and Ole Miss. When speaking with Chambliss about a potential transfer, Golding referenced the quarterback’s former head coach. He said he’d be hated by his fanbase if his chose to leave.

The pitch worked. Trinidad Chambliss stayed at Ole Miss. After a lengthy eligibility battle, he can now focus on getting the Rebels back to the playoff.

Chambliss has spent five seasons in college. Four were played at Ferris State. He was a reserve for the vast majority of his first three years on campus.
He took over the starting role in 2024 to lead the Bulldogs to a 14-1 mark. Chambliss buoyed success into an Ole Miss offer.
Initially, there were doubts as to whether he’d be granted a sixth season. He had already exhausted his redshirt. The NCAA denied a waiver for an eligibility extension.
Citing a medical issue in the 2022 season, he was able to reverse his fate. An injunction was granted by a Mississippi judge with Ole Miss ties. While the ruling was controversial, it earned him another year at the university.
Chambliss is now eligible to play at Ole Miss one more year. He won his case. The Rebels won their recruiting battle. Pete Golding wasn’t afraid to get dirty. The quarterback will look to make Kiffin regret leaving him high and dry.
