Oregon State linebacker Dylan Layne made it abundantly clear that he was not impressed by the (lack of) crowd for Saturday’s college football game at Fresno State. And then the Beavers lost to the Bulldogs…
Awkward!
If I had a nickel for every time a college football team lost after a defensive player mocked his opponent’s game day atmosphere, I would have two nickels. That is not a lot of nickels but it’s weird that it happened twice in the same season.
Dyan Layne questioned Fresno State’s crowd.
Oregon State traveled south to Fresno State on Saturday. The college football game between new conference foes was not very well attended because it was also Halloween night. And it was rainy.
Valley Children’s Stadium, formerly known as Bulldog Stadium, holds a maximum capacity of 40,727. The university announced an official attendance of 32,501. That number was inflated. It was not anywhere close to 32,501.
The lackluster tailgate scene prior to kickoff served as an early preview of the crowd.
This was how it looked inside the stadium:
Fans also cleared out when the rain started to fall.

Beavers linebacker Dylan Layne acknowledged the poor attendance just moments before he and his teammates ran out of the tunnel with head coach JaMarcus Shepard. He can be heard saying yelling “Where’s everybody at?!” in a video captured from the field.
“Where’s everybody at?!” yells Oregon State LB Dylan Lane. Head coach JaMarcus Shephard leads the Beavers out with a big smile.

A similar situation took place at Northwestern at the end of September. Colorado defensive back Ben Finneseth quipped that it sounded like a “library” in Evanston because it was so quiet. The Buffaloes went on to lose to the Wildcats. Déjà vu!
Oregon State lost the college football game.
Fresno State jumped out to a 21-10 lead at halftime and went on to beat Oregon State by a final score of 38-22. The Beavers more than likely played their way out of College Football Playoff contention with the loss. Although they actually finished with more total yards, more first downs, more time of possession and more conversions on third and fourth down, they allowed five more sacks than the Bulldogs, committed four more penalties and committed one more turnover. They also scored 16 less points…
Dylan Layne, who finished the game as Oregon State’s leading tackler, was not impressed by the lack of fans in the stands— but the Fresno State faithful still managed to make themselves heard! It was much louder at Valley Children’s Stadium than you would expect.
Layne also lost the game. It was the second time this season that a college football player mocked the attendance and lost. Brutal.
