The girl’s basketball team at Orient-Macksburg High School played its final game on Thursday night. Not just of the season, but of all-time.
The Bulldogs will completely cease to exist in a matter of months and they lost the last game in school history on a heartbreaking (but epic) buzzer-beater.
Orient-Macksburg High School is located in Orient, Iowa, approximately 65 miles southwest of Des Moines. The larger community school district came to exist in 1960 when schools in Orient merged with schools in Macksburg. However, the school board voted last summer to dissolve the district due to low enrollment and staffing issues. Less than 100 students enrolled at the high school this year.
Students, grades K-12, will spend next year at Nodaway Valley. They will then be split between Nodaway Valley and Winterset, effective July 1, 2026. It is the first district-wide closure in Iowa in over a decade.
Thus, the Bulldogs will not play for their school next year. Their school will close, permanently, in June.
Orient-Macksburg hosted a Region 8 girl’s high school basketball playoff game on Thursday. Madrid hit the road as the underdog but left as the victor on an epic buzzer-beater.
The Tigers tied the game at 38 with under 20 seconds remaining in the second half. The Bulldogs had a chance to take the lead in the closing moments but they could not execute. An air ball gave the ball right back to their opponent with just seconds left on the clock.
Madrid’s Samantha Springer pulled down the rebound, took two dribbles (she might’ve traveled) and threw up a prayer as time expired from the opposite three-point line. SWISH! The shot went in.
I’ve NEVER seen a buzzer beater like this. Why? @MadridTigers Samantha Springer hits a 3/4 court 3 to beat Orient-Macksburg 41-38 in the playoffs. That’s the last game ever for O/M which is closing due to low #s after being open since 1921. A century of sports ends in heartbreak. pic.twitter.com/XpH6EyCBwo

Although it was an incredible win in incredible fashion for the Tigers, it was heartbreak for the home team. Orient-Macksburg girl’s basketball lost its final game — ever — on a three-quarter court heave.
