Paige Spiranac is coming to Michael Block’s defense after he’s found himself receiving backlash from fans.

Block, a club pro whose magical run at the PGA Championship over the weekend earned him a sponsor’s exemption to play at the Charles Schwab Challenge this week, appeared on Bob Menery’s podcast on Wednesday and made a bold claim that angered fans.

In a clip from the interview, Menery asked Block to explain how his game differs from Rory McIlroy’s, and he responded by saying that he would be one of the best players in the world if he could hit his driver as far as McIlroy does.

“He’s a lot longer than I am, that’s what it is,” said Block

“So the length is the big thing?” Menery asked.

“Oh my God, What I would shoot from where Rory hits it would be stupid. I think I’d be one of the best players in the world.

“Hands down. If I had that stupid length, all day. My iron game, wedge game, around the greens and my putting is world class,” he said.

Some fans felt that Block was taking a shot at McIlroy with his comments.

After Block had an absolutely terrible showing at the Charles Schwab Challenge, where he shot 11 over par on Thursday, Spiranac defended the golfer on Twitter.

“Feel for Michael Block after his round today. There’s so much pressure to perform and no one prepares you for how to handle public scrutiny. One quick video clip or headline can twist the narrative (I know from experience…most recently involving him) so cut him some slack”
