Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball head coach Patrick Ewing had a brutal season and that’s putting it lightly. This was Ewing’s second losing season as coach of Georgetown in his five seasons with the Hoyas.

The previous worst season of his Georgetown coaching career was a 15-17 season in 2019/20. Patrick Ewing blew those stats out of the water this season with the Hoyas riding a 21 GAME LOSING STREAK to finish the year and a season record of 6-25.

Patrick Ewing’s Georgetown Hoyas faced the Seton Hall Pirates in Wednesday’s first round of the Big East Tournament. Georgetown kept that losing streak going and fell 53-57 to Seton Hall. That ended the Hoyas’ season with a 21 game losing streak, one of the longest losing streaks I’ve ever heard of from a reputable College Basketball program.

After the game, Coach Ewing was asked about how he’d turn the program around, what was next, etc. Here’s what he had to say…

What happens next?

Patrick Ewing: “It’s been a rough year. Can’t do anything rash. Just gotta take a few days, regroup, think about what we want to do and then start the process.

Will the 2022/23 season be more promising?

Patrick Ewing: “Like I said, I’m not going to make any rash decisions. I know we will be better next year. That’s it.”

How do you discuss a losing streak without actually saying the words “losing streak”? Well, Patrick Ewing shows us a master class in that here…

Patrick Ewing: “In life, you’re going to have bumps in the road. And right now, this year, this was my bumps in the road, our bumps in the road. And to me that’s one of the things when I’m talking to kids, it’s all about how you come out of it. How do you handle it. I think my guys have handled it with class. I think I’ve handled it with class. And our better years are still ahead of us.”

What even is a Hoya and where did that name come from?

It’s a bulldog. Georgetown actually has a few paragraphs here explaining the origin of the Hoyas mascot name and their long history of bulldog mascots. It’s worth a read if you’ve never learned that history before.
