The New England Patriots have successfully claimed former Carolina Panthers quarterback Matt Corral off waivers, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Corral, who was originally a 3rd round pick by the Panthers in last year’s 2022 NFL draft, found himself on the Patriots‘ radar once again.

Interestingly, the Patriots had initially traded their draft pick to the Panthers to enable Carolina to secure Corral in the first place during the draft. Just a year later, the quarterback has switched teams, landing in New England.

This move comes at an interesting juncture for the Patriots, as they were left with no backup QB on the active roster following recent roster cutdowns to the 53-man roster.

Bailey Zappe and rookie Malik Cunningham were both released during this process, leaving the team with a quarterback gap that needed to be filled.

Fortunately for the Patriots, both Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham have since found their way back to the team’s practice squad after not making the final roster.

As the Patriots prepare for the upcoming season, the addition of Matt Corral brings an interesting addition to the quarterback room.
