The New England Patriots have waived quarterback Matt Corral, just days before their season opener.

The team has opted to bring Bailey Zappe back from the practice squad to the active roster, where he will serve as the backup to starting quarterback Mac Jones in Week 1.

The Patriots had claimed Matt Corral from the Carolina Panthers last week, but the decision to waive him indicates a change of plans for the team.

There is a possibility that Corral could find his way back to the Patriots’ practice squad if he clears waivers.

Corral’s journey has been marked by ups and downs. The former third-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft had his rookie season cut short by an injury before he could take the field.

Despite a promising college career, where he amassed over 8,200 passing yards, 57 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions, Corral has struggled to find his footing in the NFL.

In his five career preseason appearances, Corral completed 71 of 84 passes for 318 yards but failed to throw a touchdown pass, managing just one interception.

While his potential is evident from his college achievements, it seems that the Patriots have decided to go with a different option to back up Mac Jones as they kick off their season.
