The Southern Fulton Indians were well on their way to winning back-to-back Class 1A Pennsylvania High School Baseball championships.
The Indians, who routed Eden Christian 14-3 in the 2025 state championship game, were 18-2 entering last week’s District 5, Class 1A championship game against Northern Bedford. In the district title game, senior Kaden Saunders pitched a gem.
Saunders pitched six innings, striking out nine, and allowing just one run in a 4-1 victory that sent Southern Fulton back to the state championship.
There’s just one problem…
Saunders wasn’t actually eligible to pitch in the game.
Southern Fulton Kicked Out Of Pennsylvania High School Baseball Tournament
Michael Boytim of the Altoona Mirror reports that the Indians have been kicked out of the state tournament after it was determined that Saunders was in his fifth year of high school, which made him ineligible to play.
Instead, Northern Bedford will replace Southern Fulton in the PIAA Class 1A tournament, although it’s uncertain if the Panthers will officially be crowned the District 5 champion.
“I asked the same question,” Northern Bedford coach Ryan Cherry said regarding the district championship. “They said they can’t comment on that right now. They are going to convene and talk about that later, but that has not been decided one way or another yet.”
According to Boytim’s report, the Altoona Mirror received an anonymous email on Friday that questioned the eligibility of a player on the Indians baseball team. The same email was also sent to Southern Fulton athletic director and head baseball coach Kent Hendershot, as well as principal Jeremy A. Hollinshead.
Saunder was reportedly the player named in the email.
“We do not take action on anonymous emails but do forward to the building principal, if a school is identified,” District 5 Chairman Paul Leonard told the paper.
Kaden Saunders Appears To Have Played Five Years Of High School Baseball
According to the email, Saunders began his varsity baseball career at District 3 school James Buchanan in the spring of 2022. The MaxPreps page for Saunders shows he played in 14 games and had three hits in 30 at-bats in 2022 while also pitching 16 innings.
Further reporting showed that minutes from the April 16, 2025 District 5 meeting list Kaden Saunders as a junior transfer from Saint James in Maryland, but also note that no paperwork had been received regarding Saunders by the time of the meeting.
Saunders went 7-0 with a 0.61 ERA for the Indians this season. He also batted .333 and had a walk-off double in Southern Fulton’s 4-3 District 5 semifinal win over Berlin Brothersvalley.
As of the time of writing, Southern Fulton had not offered a comment on the situation.
