Pete Alonso hit the 300th home run of his career at Citi Field

Pete Alonso hit the 300th home run of his career at Citi Field on Tuesday night. The longtime New York Mets first baseman did so as a member of the Baltimore Orioles, however.

Alonso’s return to Citi Field has sparked a strange atmosphere at Citi Field this week, as New York Mets fans are largely furious that general manager David Stearns didn’t re-sign him in the offseason.

Making matters worse for Mets fans is that Alonso — who played over 1000 games for the club — launched the 300th home run of his career while a member of the visiting team.

Pete Alonso hooked up the Mets fans who caught his 300th home run ball with game tickets, signed bats, baseballs, autographed Mets jerseys, and a round of beers

After the game, Alonso met with three fans who snagged the historic home run ball and gave them signed bats, baseballs, and autographed Mets jerseys in exchange for the ball. He also brought beers and offered the fans tickets to Orioles games in Baltimore.

“I appreciate all the support for all the years I’ve been here, all the life I’ve lived here,” Alonso said after the game. “Obviously, they’re recognizing that and they appreciate that. It’s a two-way street. Really appreciate it.”

In his first season with the Orioles, Alonso is batting .267 with 152 hits, 36 home runs, and 101 RBIs. He’s also started in all 152 games that the team has played thus far this season.

Meanwhile, Jorge Polanco, the player the Mets signed to replace Alonso, has appeared in just 37 games and is batting .148 with 20 hits, two home runs, and six RBIs. Both Polanco and Alonso have one home run at Citi Field this year, too.
