Former NFL passer Peyton Manning posted a heartfelt message online following the passing of reporter Chris Mortensen. The journalist had been battling throat cancer for nearly a decade.

Many felt immediate sorrow when the news broke, seeing the sports world lose one of its most sincere personalities. Manning was one of those upset upon hearing about Mortensen’s death given the duo’s professional relationship.

Mortensen was one of the most accomplished reporters in the industry, spending a majority of his time working at ESPN.

“Mort was widely respected as an industry pioneer and universally beloved as a supportive, hard-working teammate,” the company said in a statement online. “He covered the NFL with extraordinary skill and passion, and was at the top of his field for decades. He will truly be missed by colleagues and fans, and our hearts and thoughts are with his loved ones.”

Respected for both his professionalism and his genuine approach to covering the game, he won over the hearts of fans and players with little effort.

Peyton Manning posted his condolences after hearing the news.

“Heartbroken,” he wrote on Instagram. “We lost a true legend. Mort was the best in the business, and I cherished our friendship. I trusted him with my announcement to sign with the Broncos and with the news of my retirement. I will miss him dearly and my thoughts and prayers are with Micki & his family. Rest in peace, Mort.”
