Philadelphia might not have the cultural cachet as NYC which sits 99 miles away, nor does it (anymore) shape policy in America like D.C. 124 miles to the Southeast, but Philly has as much if not more of a cultural identity than any city in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast. The city of Philadelphia and its citizens stand on business and that was on display earlier this week when an Delco man / Eagles fan blasted the Upper Darby mayor for being a Cowboys fan.
Speaking in front of the Upper Darby Township City Council, he called out the local governmental’s failures by comparing the failures of the Dallas Cowboys who haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1996. He goes on to say “this is a Cowboys fan. This guy follows the Cowboys. We’re talking about the Cowboys … not a championship contender, not a championship contender. We’re talking about the Cowboys.”
Mayor Ed Brown has lived in the Upper Darby Township just outside of Philadelphia proper for 28 years and raised 3 children there. One would think that someone with that resumé would be Philly to their core but one would be wrong to think that. As Mayor Ed Brown backs Dem Boyz… And the video of him getting put on blast has gone viral in both Sports and Political circles over the past few days:
There is nothing funnier than a citizen calling out the incompetence of your Mayor during a council meeting by saying he is a Cowboys fan. #Delco #UpperDarby #GoBirds @CBKylePagan @CrossingBroad pic.twitter.com/rY1WWOvjfR

Upper Darby Mayor Ed Brown has a pretty impressive resumé but nowhere in it are the Dallas Cowboys mentioned… He has worked for Lockheed Martin for the past 21 years as a Cybersecurity Engineering Manager. He has an MBA from Drexel University and a management certificate from UPenn, though his LinkedIn curiously doesn’t state where he went to undergrad…
SMU, perhaps? Or is he one of those guys who became a Cowboys fan because his dad was an Eagles fan and wanted to root against his father? I knew a few of them the 10 years I lived in NYC, Cowboys fans whose family were Giants fans and they wanted to root against their own blood.
This video of the Upper Darby Mayor getting called out for being a(n incompetent) Cowboys fan made its way through sports media and all the way to FoxNews who picked up the story. I mention that for anyone who says ‘keep politics out of sports’ because the fact of the matter is sports is inextricably linked to politics these days, as is pretty much every facet of life.
