For the first time since 2022, Major League Baseball will return to Dyersville, Iowa, and the Field of Dreams for a game between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Minnesota Twins.
But the unique setting isn’t the only thing that will be different for the two teams. They’ll also be playing the game under a different set of rules than they’ve played with the entire season.
That difference in rules could well be key to the outcome of the game, and it could well be key to both teams’ seasons as they fight to remain in a fight for a playoff spot.
Phillies-Twins Field Of Dreams Game Won’t Have ABS System In Place
Prior to the start of the 2026 season, Major League Baseball introduced the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) system that allowed hitters, pitchers, and catchers to challenge the call of the home plate umpire.
While the new system was highly controversial and even had a massive flaw that was exploited early in the season before being fixed by MLB, it has been largely welcomed by fans, who are just happy to see the right calls being made in big situations.
However, they won’t have that luxury in the Field of Dreams game.
Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports that the stadium for the Field of Dreams does not have the proper technology to run the ABS system. That means that the game will be played under the old rules, without any challenge system in place.
Both teams were made aware of the situation long before the game. Additionally, the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres played under similar conditions in their two games in Mexico earlier this season.
Gelb noted that Philadelphia ranks toward the bottom of the league in challenges by their catchers. Although they have the second-best overturn rate among all teams.
Hopefully, the change in rules doesn’t end up having a meaningful effect on the game. But it could well have major playoff implications.
