Ria & Lee say their pilot weighed everyone before boarding a private plane to the Bahamas. Why does weight matter on a plane?
Flying on a private plane is often a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many people. However, the vibes can sour real quick if the pilot whips out a scale.
Ria & Lee (@xomi.00), a photography and videography team, were boarding a private plane to get to the Bahamas for work. They shared in a TikTok with over 1.5 million views how their pilot weighed everyone before boarding.
In the clip, passengers waited outside of the small blue private plane.
“Nothing humbles you faster than getting weighed before getting on a private plane… and then watching the pilot decide the boarding order based on everyone’s weight…” the on-screen text reads.
In this situation, there is no hiding.
“Heaviest board first and front, new anxiety unlocked,” the post is captioned.
Ria told BroBible, “When I saw the scale come out I panicked initially, this was not something I had ever experienced before getting on a flight lol! Then I was totally fine with it, it was for everyone’s safety, and he was super polite about the whole thing. He did a great job making sure we were all safe and comfortable. I was travelling with my team, so we all knew each other. We made it safe and sound to the Bahamas for our charter shoot, so it all worked out.”
Ria clarifies that this plane was vintage, so proper weight distribution is necessary.
“I just want to add that it was a vintage plane and it had to be loaded with heaviest at the front and lighter at the back for proper weight distribution.”
‘I’m 280 They Would Have To Strap Me To The Roof’
Viewers in the comments section made humorous remarks about being overweight and what would’ve happened if they were in this situation.
“They’d have to leave me behind,” one TikTok commenter wrote.
“I’m 280 they would have to strap me to the roof,” another added.
“Welp, looks like I’m driving… through the ocean,” a third commented.
Others chimed in with other scenarios where their weight was revealed to the public.
“Nothing is worse than when I got weighed in Switzerland. They wrote my weight with a sharpie in large numbers on my forearm,” one shared.
“I was weighed by the cutest boy in 6th grade for health class. He said, ‘Really??’ I fear nothing now,” another revealed.
“I was a flight nurse & had to weigh in every month. And it was recorded on a board everyone could see,” a third wrote.
Why Does Weight Matter On A Plane?
A flight’s weight and balance play a major role in every trip. Before any flight, it’s essential to know how much weight the plane can carry, the weight of the airplane’s load, and the best way to distribute it, California Aeronautical University (CAU) shares. Being on top of these two factors is crucial to ensure a safe flight.
Every airplane will have an operating manual that will list out the plane’s weight and balance limits.
The center of gravity limits the amount of weight that is distributed amongst the longitudinal and lateral axes of the plane. Pilots need to be mindful of the center of gravity, as every aircraft is impacted by this when flying.
All aircraft need to keep track of fuel, cargo, passengers, and the plane’s frame, as each plane has a maximum landing weight. Smaller airplanes do this by shifting passengers to particular seats and shifting bags around. One thing to note is that the fuel will burn over time which will naturally create less weight so that the center of gravity can be redistributed during long flights.
If the weight and balance protocols aren’t taken seriously, this could lead to bad news. AirBus reports tail tipping, unexpected pitch-up during climb, tail strike during take-off or after runway end, or worst-case a stall and crash can take place if weight and balance are off. Additionally, overweight planes can lead to overloaded engines, inefficient fuel burn, or longer takeoff rolls, per CAU.
So if you encounter a pilot with a scale before, it’s to ensure a safe flight is completed. This will typically be done on smaller planes, and any issues with weight will be addressed before takeoff.
