The Pittsburgh Pirates have been the surprise team of the first month of the Major League Baseball season. Many left them for dead for yet another season, but that’s not been the case.
The Pittsburgh Pirates sit at 20-8, good for the 2nd-best record in the entire league, despite being picked to finish near the bottom of the National League Central. After starting the season a very respectable 11-7, they’ve won a remarkable nine out of ten games to surge to a commanding early lead in the National League Central.
They’ve done it on the backs of outstanding hitting. Outfielder Brian Reynolds has been a burgeoning star for a few years, and now everyone knows who he is after a torrid April. Reynolds has an OPS of .914 and has driven in 22 runs already. Couple that with young star Ke’Bryan Hayes recapturing good form at the plate and the resurgence of veterans Carlos Santana and Pittsburgh Pirates legend Andrew McCutchen, and you get an offense that has absolutely raked.
That continued on Saturday as the Pirates took on the Washington Nationals in a doubleheader following a rain-out on Friday. They won the first game 6-3. Then, an offensive explosion happened in the second game as they won 16-1.

And, another big highlight was the first-ever hit for Drew Maggi. Maggi, 33 years old, spent 13 years in the minor leagues prior to being called up last week. Unfortunately, he will return to AA Altoona on Sunday.

After the game, the Pittsburgh Pirates had a hilarious trolling of the Washington Nationals with some spin on the traditional score graphic.

That’s pretty good. After years of futility with no playoff series wins other than a one-game wild card playoff since 1979, Pittsburgh Pirates fans deserve to have some fun.
