For the next few months, there will be just one topic of conversation when it comes to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Who is going to be playing quarterback for them in 2022?

As of right now, we really only know one thing for sure. It won’t be Ben Roethlisberger. Beyond that, there has been plenty of speculation about their options.

A few weeks ago, one NFL analyst thought it was a simple as trade for Aaron Rodgers. If that doesn’t work, just trade for Deshaun Watson.

Some think they could try to find one in the draft. It won’t be easy, with the Pittsburgh Steelers currently holding the 20th pick and an unremarkable class of QBs available in this year’s draft.

Then there’s the possibility that they stick with Mason Rudolph for the year. It’s likely not an option that would make many Steelers fans happy after watching him tie against the Detroit Lions this year.

There are also some veteran quarterbacks available through free agency who have shown themselves to be capable NFL starters.

When asked about it in his final media availability of the season, Mike Tomlin wouldn’t rule anything out.

While the Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t quite ready to commit to one approach or another, there is one that makes the most sense for the franchise.

They should go out and sign one of those veteran quarterbacks. Marcus Mariota will be a free agent. Jameis Winston will be a free agent. Jimmy Garoppolo could be cut to let Trey Lance take over the 49ers.

Any one of these players would be an upgrade over the 2021 version of Ben Roethlisberger and would likely be cheaper. The Pittsburgh Steelers were too good this year to go into a complete rebuild and a starting QB who can throw more than 10 yards downfield could give them a chance to win the AFC North next season.

While there are a bunch of options out there for the Pittsburgh Steelers, this looks like the one they should roll with.
