England’s Premier League could be on the verge of a return, as reports indicate that the league has put forth a plan — known as “Project Restart” — to resume gameplay behind closed doors.
According to a report from The Times, Premier League executives have recently been holding talks with the English government about their plans to restart league play.
The plan would see teams play at a handful of closed-door matches at “approved grounds”. Additionally, the report states that a maximum of 400 people — such as media and medical personnel — would be permitted to if they tested negative.
After suspending the season on March 13, the Premier League currently has 92 total games left to play.
The Premier League is planning to resume the season with matches at “approved” stadiums when the government grants permission for clubs to return to action.
The Times can reveal that a cross-sport group is working with government officials on behalf of all professional sports looking to return to action as soon as possible.
Several sports are looking to use a limited number of venues in an effort to reduce the spread of coronavirus while cutting down on the need for policing, medical support and testing. [via The Times]
The news of “Project Restart” comes just one day after the Eredivisie — the top soccer league in the Netherlands — announced that the 2019-20 season would be declared null-and-void.
England’s Premier League isn’t the only major European soccer league preparing to return, as the German Bundesliga announced this week that they are prepared to resume play on Saturday, May 9 if the government allows it.
