Longtimen Indianapolis Star writer Gregg Doyel has found himself in hot water for creeping out Caitlin Clark during her introductory press conference in Indiana.
On Wednesday afternoon, Doyel weirded out Clark as she was being introduced to the WNBA’s Indiana Fever with an extremely awkward interaction that was caught on video.
A reporter sends a “🫶” at Caitlin Clark
Caitlin Clark: "I do that at my family after every game.”
Reporter: "Start doing it to me and we'll get along just fine."

Doyel went on to write a clumsy apology on social media.
Today in my uniquely oafish way, while welcoming @CaitlinClark22 to Indy, I formed my hands into her signature 🫶. My comment afterward was clumsy and awkward. I sincerely apologize. Please know my heart (literally and figuratively) was well-intentioned. I will do better.

And then went to write a strange apology article at the Indy Star.
Via Indy Star
I’m devastated to realize I’m part of the problem. I screwed up Wednesday during my first interaction with No. 1 overall draft pick Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever.
What happened was the most me thing ever, in one way. I’m sort of known locally, sigh, for having awkward conversations with people before asking brashly conversational questions. I’ve done this for years with Colts coaches Chuck Pagano, Frank Reich and Shane Steichen. I’ve done it with Purdue players Carsen Edwards and Zach Edey. I did it with IU’s Romeo Langford, talking to them as people, not athletes.
Notice something about all those names?
They’re all men.
On the one hand, yes absolutely, male and female athletes should be treated the same. I’m talking about coverage, respect, compensation, terminology, you name it. Stories have been written about idiots who say or act otherwise.
And then, along comes a story about another insensitive man, which goes viral on social media, and I decided to write about that idiot.
Me.
Despite his multiple apologies, fans and journalists are calling on Doyel to get fired.
Framing this as being an oaf or awkward is completely missing the point. It was completely unprofessional and broke the trust players should be able to have in the media who cover them. Take a step back and for fuck’s sake don’t turn this into a column. https://t.co/V6RqlrhAln

Gregg Doyel shouldn’t have a job. This is beyond cringe to any other person, let alone Caitlin Clark. https://t.co/0vETDA7Ghg
