Dan Lanning clarified Dante Moore's press conference absence.
The Oregon football team lost in shocking fashion to Oklahoma State in its second game of the 2026 season. Starting quarterback Dante Moore did not speak to the media after the fact.
Head coach Dan Lanning was asked about his passer’s absence in his most recent press conference. He defended his player in a tense exchange with a reporter.
No reasoning was given on Saturday as to Moore’s non-attendance. Media members were not filled in that he would not be available for questioning.
Reporters asked for clarity this week, which Lanning provided.

Lanning says Moore was receiving treatment for dehydration after the game. The contest was played in Stillwater, where temperatures reached 96 degrees over the weekend.
Reports immediately surfaced after the absence that Moore was avoiding questions after a poor performance. The passer completed less than 50% of his attempts for 191 yards. He was also sacked four times.
As a result, Oregon lost the game 39-31. It was the biggest upset of the week and could have significant impacts on the Ducks‘ national title pursuits.
Dan Lanning was not happy with the narrative forming around his quarterback’s supposed cowardice. He cleared the air on Monday, though in somewhat condescending fashion.
In his response, he asked reporters why they didn’t ask him about Dante Moore’s availability on Saturday after the game before reporting on his absence. Media members said there was no reason to.

A number of media members have seen the coach’s response. Many have taken offense. There was no indication that Moore wouldn’t be in attendance.
Furthermore, Lanning’s appearance came before player availability. There was no way of knowing that Moore would be in the locker room instead of at the podium, so no questions were directed to Lanning on the topic.

No one was informed that Moore was getting treatment. Everyone expected him to answer questions about the loss.

When he no-showed, it was a surprise. No clarity was given, leading reporters to ask Lanning about the absence this week.
There are obviously two sides to the interaction. Lanning is defending his player from negative attention. Media isn’t entitled to every detail, and Moore will be available to speak about the game on Wednesday.
With that said, the optics were poor. Lanning’s response made the situation worse. It’s now fueling the storyline that he’s looking to avoid.
