Amidst the Philadelphia Eagles blowout loss at the hands of the Tampa Bay Bucs on Monday night, former Washington head coach Jay Gruden decided to chime in on Twitter, specifically about the protection of quarterback Jalen Hurts.

“If I ever put a QB through what Philly is putting Jalen through, I apologize. Pick up a blitz!” Gruden tweeted during the Wild Card round match matchup between the Birds and the Bucs.

Current NFL analyst and former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III, who spent much of his prime playing under Gruden, became aware of his tweet and posted a hilariously skeptical selfie in response.

Gruden then responded to Griffin’s selfie — which was taken on the set of ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown — by saying “You weren’t prepared Robert?”

RGIII wasn’t prepared to let that slide as he then posted another photo of himself with the caption: “You told me you didn’t know how to coach a QB who could throw and run like me, so looks like you weren’t prepared Jay.”

What RGIII is likely referencing in his initial tweet is the fact that he was sacked more than 30 times in each of his first three seasons in the league. The former Heisman Trophy winner also infamously tore his ACL and LCL in a 2013 Wild Card game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Gruden’s time in Washington from 2014 to 2019 wound up being his only shot at being a head coach in the NFL, as he’d then go on to be the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2020 season. Since 2022, Gruden as served as an “offensive consultant” for the Los Angeles Rams.

As for RGIII, after being drafted by the then-Redskins with the #2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, he’d spend just three years with the team before playing for the Cleveland Browns in 2016 and the Baltimore Ravens from 2018 to 2020.
