Minor league baseball teams have a reputation for thinking outside the box when it comes to figuring out ways to provide fans with an experience that’s both enjoyable and unique. One Triple-A club recently checked at least one of those boxes, as the internet has been captivated by a clip of Ronald McDonald surprisingly nailing the national anthem before a game.
Most MLB teams don’t have much trouble raking in money, but the same can’t be said for most of their minor league affiliates. The players grinding in the hopes of making The Show may be the main attraction, but the marketing departments for those squads are arguably their most valuable asset due to the creative promotions they tend to rely on to lure in casual fans.
Games at those levels usually feature some quirky forms of entertainment in between innings in the form of mascot hijinks, competitions where fans go head-to-head with each other, and novelty acts aspiring to become the next Red Panda.
However, spectators who headed to a Triple-A game in North Carolina last week didn’t have to wait for the contest to get underway to be treated to a very novel sight.
Ronald McDonald sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a Charlotte Knights game and absolutely crushed it
The Charlotte Knights are the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox and play their games at Truist Field. On May 1st, that stadium was the site of a showdown between the home team and the Gwinnett Stripers, which game featured a promo to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House.
The fast food mascot who lends his name to that charity was tapped to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and I promise you are not prepared for the clip that took the internet by storm after it went viral nearly a week after the unexpectedly impressive performance unfolded in Charlotte.
Another video captured some Knights players struggling to keep it together while watching the fairly surreal scene unfold, and it’s pretty hard to blame them.
@lpaulfranklin God bless America. God bless Ronald McDonald. 🇺🇸🙏🏻🤡 @Charlotte Knights #mcdonalds #ronaldmcdonald #charlotteknightsbaseball #USA
It doesn’t get much more American than that.
