Rutgers football is down bad. The Scarlet Knights are coming off of their seventh-straight season that ended below .500 and their 2022 schedule does not bode well for that to change.

  1. at Boston College
  2. vs. Wagner
  3. at Temple
  4. vs. Iowa
  5. at Ohio State
  6. vs. Nebraska
  7. BYE WEEK
  8. vs. Indiana
  9. at Minnesota
  10. vs. Michigan
  11. at Michigan State
  12. vs. Penn State
  13. at Maryland

In a best case scenario, Rutgers beats Wagner and Temple, and then pulls an upset against Indiana, Minnesota, Maryland and one of their other seven opponents— or something like that. There is hope that head coach Greg Schiano can get his program to bowl eligibility in his third year with the program, but it seems very unlikely.

Based on the schedule alone, the Scarlet Knights probably will not be favored in any of their games this fall except for Wagner and maybe Temple. It’s a big hill to climb.

In addition, the interest around the Rutgers football program is not significant. While the alumni base has some diehard fans, they are mostly uninterested in the team unless it is winning like it was in the early 2000s.

Or, at the very least, they are mostly uninterested in making Gameday in New Brunswick a priority. They do not sellout their season ticket allotment in a matter of days or weeks like some of their Big Ten counterparts.

As a result, Rutgers football is forced to sell its season ticket packages in unique ways. Like at Costco.

That’s not a joke. Rutgers is actually selling season tickets at Costco.

The team is selling two lower level sideline tickets and parking passes to all 2022 regular season home games for $99. It is listed as a 38% discount.

Rutgers may not be the only program in the FBS that does this, and other professional teams like the Yankees are also selling ticket packages at Costco, but it is the first time that I have seen anything like this. The Scarlet Knights are desperate to put fans in the seats at SHI Stadium in Piscataway and are turning to Costco to try and make it happen.
