It looks like the San Diego Padres may need to wait a bit longer than expected to finally see their team at full strength.

Back in August, they thought they had made the move that would put them into World Series contention when they made a huge trade with the Nationals to land Juan Soto.

Unfortunately, shortly after making the move they learned that they would be without one of their stars for the rest of the season.

They are now just 21 games away from the return of Fernando Tatis Jr, but it looks like they are going to be without another one of their stars for a little while too.

According to The Athletic’s Dennis Lin, star Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove fractured the big toe on his left foot in the weight room yesterday.

The Padres made a big offseason trade to bring Musgrove in from the Pittsburgh Pirates ahead of the 2021 season and he has been a stud for them in the 2 years since.

In his first year with the team, he had a 3.18 ERA and was striking out just over 10 batters per 9 innings pitched.

In year 2 he got even better. While his strikeout numbers dipped a bit, he was able to improve his ERA , posting a 2.93 ERA. His performance led to the first All-Star Game appearance of his career.

Luckily for Musgrove and the San Diego Padres, he has nearly a month before Opening Day and the Padres have Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, and Michael Wacha in their rotation while he Musgrove recovers.

Hopefully he’ll be able to recover in time for his first scheduled regular season start.
