There are still a few teams searching for a new head coach. Hopefully, they will make a final decision in the coming week.

At first, Sean Payton was a top candidate. However, since then teams have cooled off on the former Super Bowl-winning coach.

Well, it sounds like the latest rumors about the situation might just reveal why teams are deterring away from Payton. According to Tom Pelissero, the New Orleans Saints are demanding a bit more in a trade than previously reported. It was believed they were seeking a mid-level first-round pick. Instead, it sounds like they’re asking for two first-round picks for Sean Payton.

If that’s the case, then no wonder Payton has yet to find a new home. The teams seeking a new head coach need their draft picks to continue building the roster. Trading them away for Sean Payton could be detrimental to building a competent roster for the future.

It’ll be interesting to see how things play out. Due to the latest rumors, it seems like we’ll see Sean Payton return as an analyst for the 2023 season. Perhaps this time next year Payton will receive more interest in the head coaching cycle once again.

Payton’s contract with the Saints expires after the 2024 season. If the Saints don’t temper down the asking price for Sean Payton via trade, then maybe teams will just wait until his contract expires.
